"So, the P47 Thunderbolt was considered huge, cumbersome and not agile. The Germans made fun of it.
In battle, it outclimbed and outturned the ME 109. It could beat any aircraft in a dive. It carried a huge external fuel load in drop tanks. The Germans leaned the hard way that they were much inferior to that huge aircraft.
Yet, many of those squadrons transitions into P51s, which absolutely dominated the skies.
In a ground support role, it carried 8 1.75 inch rockets, capable of destroying any German armor. It had 6, 0.50 inch machine guns and several bombs.
